A foundation that is even slightly off can look obvious in photos. Matching it takes a few minutes if you know what to look for.
Know your undertone
Your undertone is the subtle colour beneath the surface: cool (pink or blue), warm (yellow or golden) or neutral. Silver jewellery that flatters you often suggests cool; gold suggests warm. Veins that look blue or purple lean cool; greenish veins lean warm.
Test on the jawline
Swatch two or three close shades in a stripe along your jawline, not on your hand. The right shade disappears into the skin where your face meets your neck.
Check it in daylight
Store lighting can mislead. Step near a window or outside, wait a few minutes for the product to oxidise, and then judge the match.
Quick tips
- Match your neck and chest as well as your face.
- Your shade can change with the seasons; many people keep two and mix them.
- Choose a finish that fits your skin: dewy for dry skin, matte for oily.
- Blend down the neck and set only where you need it.
Practice is what makes this easy, so try a new shade at home before a big event.
